I’m the type of traveler who likes routine, at least when it comes to what I pack.
In fact, I always have my travel backpack pre-packed, meaning that all I need to do is drop my laptop inside, and I’m ready to hit the road.
As you think about what to pack for your next trip, perhaps the tech gear that’s always in my backpack will provide some inspiration — whether you plan to work from anywhere or want to unplug and disconnect.
Additionally, with Black Friday and Cyber Monday approaching, now is the best time to stock up on these essentials.
Apple AirPods Pro 3

I used to be the traveler who would bring bulky over-ear headphones with me. But as the tech packed into portable earbuds has gotten better, there’s no need to take up half of your backpack with big headphones.
My go-to pair of in-ear earbuds have long been Apple’s AirPods, but this year’s AirPods Pro 3 ($219.99 on Amazon) elevate the experience for travelers.
With better noise cancellation and battery life, this is the single best pair of earbuds for travelers. Plus, they’re also handy when you’re at the gym, walking to the office, or just relaxing.
My runner-up would be the cheaper, entry-level AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation ($99.99 on Amazon)— just don’t expect as comfortable a fit.
Anker Nano Travel Adapter
This one may surprise you, but no matter where I go, I’m always packing an international power adapter.
That’s because airplane power outlets are often loose and wobbly. I find that many of them don’t snugly fit U.S. adapters, especially the big ones that come with a computer.
Personally, I’m a big fan of Anker’s Nano Travel Adapter ($19.99 on Amazon).
It’s got a slim profile and easily fits into a small pocket. Plus, it sports two USB-C and two USB-A ports for even more charging options.
AirFly Pro 2
While more and more planes are starting to sport Bluetooth connectivity, the vast majority don’t. And with the proliferation of Bluetooth headphones, connecting to the inflight entertainment system becomes an issue.
Enter AirFly. The dongle that pairs your wireless headphones to the seatback entertainment screen.
It’s easy to use, super portable, and durable. I keep it tucked away in my backpack because I never know when I’ll need to use it.
You can choose from AirFly Pro 2 (for $59.99 on Amazon) or the cheaper AirFly SE ($34.97 on Amazon).
Apple AirTags

You can never have enough AirTags. Apple’s popular item trackers are a no-brainer for every bag you pack.
I have them on my keychain, in all of my carry-ons and checked bags, and even in my wallet. Plus, with new airline integrations, you’ll have higher odds of being reunited with your misplaced bag when you use an AirTag.
I even have a few extra lying around in case one breaks or dies. You should, too.
Buy AirTags in a four-pack ($64.98 on Amazon) or individually ($17.97 on Amazon).
Anker power bank
No matter where you go, it’s a good idea to bring a portable power bank. I can’t tell you how many times it’s saved me from a broken airplane or airport power outlet.
There are thousands of choices across Amazon, but I’ve long been a fan of the Anker brand, and the MagGo magnetic pack in particular ($54.99 on Amazon). It’s portable, durable, and feels a bit more “premium” than some no-name brands.
You can also choose a more traditional power brick, like the Anker Prime power bank ($58.49 on Amazon), which is great for charging multiple devices — not just iPhones.
Retractable HDMI cable
This one might come as a surprise, but bringing an HDMI cable on my trips makes me more productive (and more entertained, too).
I use the cable to hook up my laptop to hotel TVs, external monitors, and even the seatback entertainment screen on the newest jets.
Whether it’s catching up on work or bingeing on the latest show, this HDMI cable does the trick ($12.49 on Amazon).
MacBook Air

Long-time followers know that I’ve been hooked on the Apple ecosystem for years and use a Mac for my day-to-day computing.
Whenever I’m on the road, I always carry a 13-inch MacBook Air ($749 on Amazon). It’s Apple’s most portable (and affordable — can’t beat the current sale price!) laptop.
Between the wildly good battery life and the device’s portability, it’s probably the best travel laptop on the market right now.
There are rumors that Apple will introduce a smaller and more affordable entry-level MacBook, but until then, I’m on team MacBook Air for travel.
Life-saver: Carbon monoxide detector
This one is big.
Many states don’t require carbon monoxide detectors in hotel rooms.
While I’d expect the big chains to require detectors in every room, who’s to say they’re properly maintained and tested every few months?
That’s why I always recommend packing a portable carbon monoxide alarm wherever you go — and so should your friends and family.
I use the simple, battery-powered Kidde carbon monoxide detector ($27.94 on Amazon), but you could splurge on a wall-plugged, LED-screened model ($62.97 on Amazon).
Just don’t forget to unplug it during checkout.
