If you’ve ever needed to overnight near a major airport, odds are you’ve been spoiled for choice — even within your preferred loyalty program.

But in my mind, there are really only three things worth considering when picking an airport hotel.

How to pick an airport hotel

There are three questions to ask when you’re selecting an airport hotel.

  1. Is it connected to the terminal?
    1. A connected property is usually worth the premium. The exception is Denver, where the Westin is almost always absurdly expensive.
  2. If not, can you walk or take public transit to the property?
    1. If I can avoid an Uber or a hotel shuttle, I’m happy to pay a bit more.
  3. When was the property built or renovated?
    1. A quick Google search (or Claude prompt) should give you the answer.

With that out of the way, here’s my list of the top airport hotels across major U.S. airports. Bookmark this one for next time.

Top airport hotels at 15 US airports

ATL — Renaissance Atlanta Airport Gateway

ZACH GRIFF

This is the closest and best option at the world’s busiest airport. It’s not inside the terminal, but the free 24-hour ATL SkyTrain gets you there in under five minutes, so you can skip the shuttle entirely.

BNA — Hilton BNA Nashville Airport Terminal

Nashville’s first and only on-airport hotel, connected to the central terminal by a covered pedestrian bridge. This property opened in 2024 and leans hard into its aviation theme, with a rooftop pool and bar on the 14th floor overlooking the runways.

BOS — Hilton Boston Logan Airport Hotel

Connected to terminals A and E via a covered walkway, with a shuttle to the rest. It’s the most convenient option at Logan.

DEN — The Westin Denver International Airport

Connected directly to the terminal, so you can walk from baggage claim to your room. The catch (as I said up top): it’s almost always absurdly expensive.

The Hyatt Place Peña Station is just steps from the RTD station, so it’s a close second.

DFW — Grand Hyatt DFW

Built right into Terminal D, so you can roll out of bed and be at your gate in minutes. For a quick connection or an early flight, it’s hard to beat.

DTW — Westin Detroit Metropolitan Airport

Connected directly to the McNamara Terminal, which makes it the obvious pick if you’re flying Delta.

You can walk from check-in to security without ever stepping outside. The rooms are a bit dated, but the convenience is unmatched at DTW.

IAH — Houston Airport Marriott at George Bush Intercontinental

Connected to the terminals via the airport’s inter-terminal train. Solid Marriott with a pool and decent restaurant.

JFK — TWA Hotel

ZACH GRIFF

Probably the coolest airport hotel in the country. (Look at that rooftop pool.)

It’s connected to Terminal 5 via the original red-carpeted flight tubes and a short AirTrain ride from everything else. (If you’re adventurous, you can also walk to Terminal 4.)

LAX — Hyatt Regency Los Angeles International Airport

It’s the closest hotel to LAX and an easy walk, especially from Terminal 1 (just mind the crossing at Sepulveda). A 24-hour shuttle exists, but the whole point is that you don’t need it.

MCO — Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport

Built right into the main terminal atrium, so you can walk from your room to security in a couple of minutes. The rooms are quiet, and the pool deck overlooks the runways. The most convenient option at MCO.

MIA — Hyatt Regency Coral Gables

ZACH GRIFF

All the MIA airport hotels are mediocre, so if you’re getting into a car anyway, stay here — it’s a far nicer property about 15 minutes from the airport, in a walkable area with real restaurants.

MSP — InterContinental Minneapolis – St. Paul Airport

Connected directly to Terminal 1 via a skybridge, so you can walk to security without going outside — a real perk in a Minnesota winter.

ORD — Hilton Chicago O’Hare Airport

Connected to terminals 1, 2, and 3 via an underground walkway, right across from the entrances. It’s the only true on-airport hotel at O’Hare, which makes up for its dated interior.

PHL — Philadelphia Airport Marriott

Connected to Terminal B via an enclosed pedestrian bridge, with easy access to the rest of the terminals. Definitely dated, but the convenience is key.

SFO — Grand Hyatt at SFO

San Francisco’s only on-airport hotel, opened in 2019 with its own dedicated AirTrain station.

This property is worth a visit even if you don’t need to be at the airport.

Bottom line

In my mind, the best airport hotel is the one that gets you from the lobby to the gate with the least hassle.
