United Airlines is once again flexing its muscle as the nation’s largest international carrier, as it just unveiled the biggest expansion in its history.

The Chicago-based airline has made it an annual tradition to debut a slew of new long-haul routes each summer.

Some years, the airline adds far-flung cities like Nuuk, Greenland, and Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Others are way less exciting. (Like in summer 2023 when United only had one true new route.)

Summer 2027, however, will be the airline’s biggest one yet.

United is adding 10 brand-new international destinations, plus three new routes to cities it already serves — 13 new long-haul routes in total.

Better yet, the airline isn’t cutting a single route to pay for it. Every destination United added this year is coming back, network chief Patrick Quayle confirmed.

United’s 10 new international destinations

United will add a whopping 10 new international destinations next summer season, nine of which are in Europe.

This includes:

  • Catania, Italy
  • Ibiza, Spain
  • Ljubljana, Slovenia
  • Luxembourg
  • Marseille, France
  • Okinawa, Japan
  • Olbia, Italy
  • Terceira, Portugal
  • Toulouse, France
  • Valencia, Spain

Highlights from this expansion include adding service to Catania, United’s second nonstop destination in Sicily. United launched Newark to Palermo in 2025. (I flew on the inaugural.)

That means United will have flights to both sides of the Italian island next summer. (Delta already flies from New York to Catania.)

Meanwhile, service to Olbia in Sardinia isn’t necessarily surprising either.

Olbia was one of Delta’s two big long-haul markets that it added this summer. (The other was Malta. Ibiza was a contender, but it didn’t win the SkyMiles contest.)

Airline network planners love copying successful moves from their competitors. And while other carriers usually copy the work of Quayle, this time, Quayle is borrowing from his enemies in Atlanta.

Aside from Catania and Olbia, United will be the only U.S. airline flying to the other destinations—most of which are unlocked by the extra-long-range Airbus A321XLR.

United’s new Airbus A321XLR is the big unlock

United has 50 Airbus A321XLRs on order, designed to replace the aging Boeing 757-200s and expand the long-haul network with service to secondary markets that don’t have enough demand to fill a wide-body jet.

The A321XLR starts flying select domestic routes in September. It’ll make its international debut on Dec. 1 with flights from Washington Dulles to Amsterdam and Dublin, with tickets going on sale Thursday, Aug. 27. It’ll then operate in five markets next summer: Ibiza, Luxembourg, Marseille, Toulouse and Valencia.

Quayle explained that Luxembourg is an important business corridor with U.S. tech and banking ties. Corporate travelers currently burn multiple hours connecting through a European hub to get there.

With the A321XLR, United can pull out all the stops and give deep-pocketed travelers a reason to splurge for a nonstop.

Toulouse also has a corporate angle. Airbus’s North American headquarters sit near Dulles, and its worldwide headquarters are in Toulouse.

Other places like Ibiza and Valencia cater more toward leisure travelers, but United doesn’t have to fill that many seats to make these markets work.

The A321XLR features 20 new Polaris suites, 12 Premium Plus recliners, 36 Economy Plus extra-legroom seats, and 82 standard economy seats. One row in Economy Plus has blocked middle seats.

That’s in part to strategically cap the jet at 150 passengers. At that count, the FAA’s one-per-50 ratio requires just three flight attendants — plus one more for the doors in Polaris, for a minimum crew of four. (United will still staff the jet with five on all five of these transatlantic routes.)

The unit economics on an A321XLR are also more favorable than flying a wide-body jet, giving United a lower-risk way to test these markets.

Of course, flying a single-aisle jet across the Atlantic is controversial.

While United’s swanky new A321XLR might feature new seats and better tech (including free Starlink Wi-Fi), the airline’s older, bigger jets have more space for passengers, especially in the back.

United’s 13 new long-haul routes

In addition to the 10 new destinations, United will add three new long-haul routes to existing destinations.

Perhaps the most noteworthy addition is service from Denver to Paris. This route has been rumored for a while, and the airline has been slowly growing its long-haul service from the Mile High City in recent years.

Quayle said Paris was the only market United evaluated for Denver this year. Milan was the largest unserved market at United’s Washington hub, Quayle added.

Service from San Francisco to Tel Aviv will finally resume for the first time since October 2023.

It’ll operate three-times-weekly flights starting on March 28 onboard the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

Bottom line

United’s summer 2027 expansion is its biggest one yet. That’s not necessarily surprising since United needs to find places to fly the new A321XLR.

The announcement covers a ton of ground: 10 new destinations across 13 routes, with no route cuts. But eight of those 10 new cities are summer-only, and United has 50 XLRs coming.

Whether it’s more European markets or another region altogether, we’re only just beginning to see how the network expands with this jet.

If I were a betting man, I’d say United is just getting started.
